I think I have a good ability to sense if the price at the pump is going to go up or down, so I’d like to trade on that. The problem is that I don’t know what to trade.

I’m looking at the prices found in the charts on gasbuddy.com and trying to find an investment that matches it. The etf ticker symbol USO is somewhat close, but not close enough. The price of gas 9/10/06 and 3/22/07 is about $2.60/gallon. However, the price of USO on 9/10 was $60.04 and it’s $49.77 now. That’s a huge difference.

Is there a minimum investment when buying ETFs?

I want to buy shares of a Vanguard ETF through scottrade. There is a $3000 minimum investment for Vanguard mutual funds but does this also apply to ETFs? What about other ETFs?

I keep hearing that one should invest in mutual funds that are a combination of around 60% stocks and 40% mutual funds. Can someone knowledgeable in mutual funds recommend a company (like Vangard for Fidelity) that sells mutual fund that invests with this arrangement (60/40)?

i am 25, self employed, making close to 200k a year. Soon i will have 200k liquid. A year ago I invested a lot of money (about 15k) into a mutual fund because that’s what so many experts and people advised. As well as to give it the “aggressive” treatment in terms of what it invests in. I am 33 years old and the idea was it would grow and by the time I retired it would be much higher, obviously. Anyway, I looked at the account because of the current economy recently and have found it has lost 42% of its value. Is there any sound advice I should be following or do I continue to leave it alone and out of my mind and hope that by retirement it gets beyond this huge drop? Is it possible that i could lose my entire investment with the way this economy is going? I am not smart with stocks and investments and I need help.

I just checked my investments with my 401K and UGH—- I saw a lot of red. I know the general advice is to wait this out… and I don’t expect to get specific advice here because people get paid for such advice (and I’d be hesitant to act on advice from a stranger anyhow)… however, looking at my portfolio would you say I need professional advice or would you say my mix is okay for someone 46 years old and eager to retire asap? It’s already June and I’m wondering if I should trust the saying Sell in May and Stay Away. (It basically means sell most of your holdings in May because markets have proven to be bad for the next months) I need help from you guys to tell me what I should sell and what i should keep. I currently have shares of NutriSystem (NTRI, that was a bad choice, Im just keeping it just to see if i can lose a little less), DryShips (DRYS), Gamestop (GME), Opnext (OPXT), Take-Two Interactive (TTWO), and XTO Energy (XTO). I also have shares of a mutual fund called Royce Value Plus Service (RYVPX). the mutual fund was originally gonna be a long term holding, but it seems that I’ve lost 16% on it. It has a 5 Star Morningstar Rating, but my dad tells me to check a website called Fund Alarm and if the statistics aren’t all green then sell. So please tell me your input about my holdings. Should I BUY, HOLD, or SELL.

I am very interested in becoming an investment banker/portfolio manager/working in hedge funds and other related areas. I understand that there is recession at the moment and these industries are the hardest hit. What can I do to get in? I have a BSc in Business management & IT (achieving first class) and has MSc in finance and accounting with distinction. I also have project management prince2 practitioner (although i don’t think it’s useful in any way for this). Problem is i finished my masters just when the recession started and hasnt been lucky since. I currenlty have a job in an entirely different field and its so frustrating at the moment bcos i feel like im wasting my life away and being seriously underpaid. Any ideas? Also i’m thinking of studying for CFA…will this really help or should i wait till i’m in the field b4 doing it? If you think i should do it, is there enough time to study for the june exam or go for september? Please help

If you are an RIA who acts as a portfolio manager in a fully managed/discretionary fund where you have been given the authority to trade without any client consent, would you always be required to disclose your holdings, or are there ways to be exempt from disclosure?
To be more precise, I mean a situation where you are an RIA given the authority to trade autonomously for an investment fund which is holding investors’ capital (investors<->investment company<->RIA working as portfolio manager).

In the words, this question is in the context of investment funds such as hedge funds that wish to protect their trading strategy.
So by disclosure I don’t mean to the firm but to the investors of the firm and even to the public.
