Is real estate a better investment than stock, bond, mutual fund in the long term?

19 Jun

i am 25, self employed, making close to 200k a year. Soon i will have 200k liquid. I want to know if i should buy my first house say around 150k and maybe sell it after a few years since the market is great for buying a house right now or invest it on different things like bonds, mutual fund, stock etc.

my goal is to to own a really nice house by the beach (1 million) and have 500k net worth for retirement etc.

if interest rates are expected to go up, is it logical to buy short or long term bonds? (buying only bonds)?

29 Apr

-given the scenario that the interest rates are expected to go up and you are allowed to buy bonds only, as a portfolio manager should you buy short term or long term bonds? and why?
-how does that adverse connection between bond prices and interest rates affect this decision?

thank you in advance, this is a question asked in my money banking class.

can I use a copyrighted image long as I list the copyright information and source?

29 Apr

I have a Spanish Portfolio project, and the cover design is supposed to be “presentable, creative, professional and have a Spanish-related design.” So I found a beautiful picture of a painting of a Spanish dancer, but it is in fact for sale, and the copyright information is printed in the bottom corner of the image. Can I still use it for the cover design, as long as I leave the copyright information intact, and list the website and that I don’t claim ownership on the back of the image?

Are my recent dividend reinvestments taxed at the short term or long term capital gains tax rate?

27 Apr

I have a regular brokerage account (not tax deferred). I bought a mutual fund a number of years ago, and over the years the dividends have been reinvested in the same fund. This year, I was advised to rebalance my portfolio, so I sold all of this mutual fund. Unfortunately, the last dividend reinvestments were within the last year.

So the question is, does this reinvestment cause my entire mutual fund sale to be taxed at the long-term or the short-term capital gains tax rate? Or is the recent reinvestment portion short term and everything else long term? If so, what do I use for the tax basis for all of that?
It’s not the dividends I am asking about. It is the reinvestments of them. When I sold the mutual fund, all of the fund, including the reinvestments got sold. The question is, are each of the small little reinvestments taxed separately, or in one big lump?

What stocks will be a wise investment to hold long term?

28 Mar

I am sick and tired of seeing my stock portfolio sometimes decreasing a few thousand dollars in one day. I am always looking for new stock investments. Which large corporate stocks are still available that have always made a profit and still have profit growth, have a low PE ratio, pay a dividend that will not be cut, have little or no debt on their balance sheet, and will be safe in this bad economy that we are facing. Provide the ticker symbols of these stocks and the reasons why the stock of these companies should be purchased.

How Do You Calculate Long Value Of A Stock Portfolio?

28 Oct

How do you calculate long value in the first place? And to find the long value of an entire portfolio, do you find the long value of each stock and then add them up together? Don’t worry, this isn’t a HW thing…so I’m not looking to cheat. But I’d like to know ASAP. Thanks! :D
