Photography: Getting your work out there?

30 May

I am a practicing photographer…and I am aware that in some cases the more expensive camera provides a better set of options/features (provided one takes the time to read the manual or take classes to learn the cameras proper functions)…I have a Canon Powershot SX110 and I adore it but I am wondering if it’s enough to build a portfolio with…or if it is even up to par….
The another side kicks in and thinks that it’s not always the camera it’s the photographer.
I have some pictures uploaded to a website called deviant art but I have yet to receive any comments on them as of yet…..

My User name on the above mentioned website is Demoness-kumori..

I would be willing to email you some samples of my photo’s.

My question is…
well, How do you really dive deep into this world…I want to make prints to hang on the wall…to make a portfolio with and to sell if I so choose but I am unaware as to how to go about any of these things…

Please leave as much detail as you possibly can, I am really going to go for it and all of your advice is greatly appreciated!

Thankyou.

If I get admitted to NYU Tisch School for photography, do i have to stay in this course for 4 years?

28 May

I really want to get into NYU but right now I am very undecided with what I really want to be. If just in case I get admitted to the Tisch School of Arts with my photography portfolio, am I going to be stuck with the course that I was admitted with for my freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior years. I believe that my portfolio is whats going to get me admitted, though, but i am undecided whether i want to be a photographer or not. So if i get in with my portfolio, can i switch my couse on my junior year? if i get accepted in the Tisch School do i have to major it on my freshmen and sophomore year or do i declare and study my major on my junior year?

whats a good site for hosting a photography portfolio?

14 May

I’m looking for something like squarespace.com, but less blog oriented, more portfolio oriented. Something where I can customize the design, upload the photos and use my own domain name, but dont have to build the whole site… i’m no programmer.

10 May

I was wondering if anybody sells pictures to places like Istock, shutterstock, or dreamstime? If so do you make very much money and how many images do you have in your portfolio. Any hints or tips are always welcome!

I want to build a portfolio for my photography and I really like the websites from here: http://www.photobiz.com/webtemplates.cfm but I do not know how to use flash at all. Does anyone know of any tutorials to make websites like this? I have Flash CS3 and I know HTML really really well. Thanks.
I want to know how to build the whole website, not just the photo slideshow-ish part. thanks!

Problems discerning appropriate white balance? (photography)?

02 May

I think I am “white balance” retarded. With all of my indoor shots…I guess I can tell something is off, but not by how much, or in what way. If I knew, I could probably fix it. Also, looking at photos, I can’t tell which ones have “good” white balance. Here is an example:

http://birdhouseimages.tripod.com/temporary/DSC_0185t.JPG

(camera’s “auto” white balance)

http://birdhouseimages.tripod.com/temporary/DSC_0185wt.JPG

(GIMP’s ‘white balance adjustment’ feature)

http://birdhouseimages.tripod.com/temporary/DSC_0185cbt.JPG

(my own attempt to custom color balance)

Which is best? What could be done to improve this photo’s WB? They are look pretty good to me, except the second, which looks green. I believe my monitor is fairly well calibrated. All 3 photos were taken under incandescent lights in a kitchen, but the incandescent WB setting on my camera often turns everything totally blue.

I shoot with a Nikon D5000.

Here’s an example of my studio lighting. How can I correct the warm hue?

Photography portfolio book help..?

01 May

I’m putting together a photographic portfolio book for the first time and… I have no idea how to do it. I’ve bought a cheap folder to use and I have 15 prints to put in it, but I’m a little unsure of presentation.

My questions are.. how exactly do I present it? Just the images? Or do I include credits with the prints? Should I have a title page? Etc etc

Thanks in advance!!

If you were a person looking at photography portfolios and you got to choose who got in…?

24 Apr

What type of images would you look for ? What photography subject/styles would you look for ?

Thanks :)
